Ichthyophonus ist eine <a href="Gattung_(Biologie)" title="Gattung (Biologie)">Gattung</a> <a href="Einzeller" title="Einzeller">einzelliger</a> <a href="Eukaryoten" title="Eukaryoten">eukaryotischer</a> <a href="Parasit" class="mw-redirect" title="Parasit">Parasiten</a> von <a href="Fische" title="Fische">Fischen</a>.

Die Gattung wurde 1911 von der deutschen Biologin <a href="Marianne_Plehn" title="Marianne Plehn">Marianne Plehn</a> (1863–1946) und ihrem Assistenten Karl Mulsow (~1887–1915) aufgestellt,<a href="#cite_note-ix_fung-1">[1]</a><a href="#cite_note-mycobank-2">[2]</a><a href="#cite_note-NCBI-3">[3]</a> mit der <a href="Typusart" class="mw-redirect" title="Typusart">Typusart</a> Ichthyophonus hoferi.<a href="#cite_note-ix_fung-1">[1]</a>

Ursprünglich hielt man diese Organismen für <a href="Pilze" title="Pilze">Pilze</a>, aber Ergebnisse phylogenetischer Analysen Ende des 20. Jahrhunderts deuten darauf hin, dass diese Protisten sowohl mit Pilzen als auch mit <a href="Tiere" class="mw-redirect" title="Tiere">Tieren</a> verwandt sind.<a href="#cite_note-Ragan1996-4">[4]</a><a href="#cite_note-Hershberger2008-5">[5]</a>

I. gasterophilus und I. hoferi wurden als die Hauptverursacher von Infektionen (Ichthyophonose) bei <a href="Lachsfische" title="Lachsfische">Lachsfischen</a> (Salmonidae) ermittelt.<a href="#cite_note-Austin2012-6">[6]</a>

<div class="mw-heading mw-heading2"><h2 id="Ichthyophonus_hoferi">Ichthyophonus hoferi</h2></div>

Die am meisten verbreitete und untersuchte Art ist die Typusart Ichthyophonus hoferi, der Erreger der Ichthyophonose bei Fischen.

Dieser Parasit wurde bei mehr als 100 Fischarten in verschiedenen Gewässern der gemäßigten und tropischen Breitengrade gefunden. Er ist ein potenzieller Krankheitserreger für viele wichtige Handels- und Zuchtfische wie <a href="Plattfische" title="Plattfische">Plattfische</a>, <a href="Seebarsch" class="mw-redirect" title="Seebarsch">Seebarsch</a>, <a href="Schellfisch" title="Schellfisch">Schellfisch</a>, <a href="Heringe" title="Heringe">Hering</a>, <a href="Makrele" title="Makrele">Makrele</a>, <a href="Sprotten" title="Sprotten">Sprotte</a> und andere. Eine Infektion führt immer zum Tod der Fische.

Ichthyophonus hoferi verursacht die sogenannte Taumelkrankheit, die alle <a href="S%C3%BC%C3%9Fwasserfisch" title="Süßwasserfisch">Süßwasserfischarten</a> und viele Meeresfische heimsuchen kann. Aus den mit der Nahrung aufgenommenen Dauerstadien des Pilzes werden im Fischdarm <a href="Am%C3%B6ben" class="mw-redirect" title="Amöben">amöbenartige</a> <a href="Plasmodien" title="Plasmodien">Plasmodien</a> frei. Sie gelangen durch die Darmwand in das <a href="Blutgef%C3%A4%C3%9F" title="Blutgefäß">Blutgefäßsystem</a> und werden so in die verschiedenen inneren Organe, zum Beispiel die Leber oder die Nieren, transportiert. Hier umgeben sie sich mit einer Hülle und wachsen allmählich heran. Aus diesen Zysten werden wieder Tochterplasmodien frei, aus denen sich weitere Zysten entwickeln. Schließlich brechen die Sporen von Innen her durch kleine Hauptgeschwüre nach außen durch, werden frei und sorgen für die weitere Verbreitung.

Die äußeren Symptome erkrankter Fische sind Gleichgewichtsstörungen (<a href="Gangst%C3%B6rung" title="Gangstörung">Taumeln</a>), <a href="Appetitlosigkeit" title="Appetitlosigkeit">Appetitlosigkeit</a>, Abmagern und plötzlicher Tod. Gelegentlich findet man auch kleine <a href="Geschwulst" class="mw-redirect" title="Geschwulst">Geschwulstbildungen</a> auf der Haut. Die inneren Organe weisen kleine runde Zysten auf. Stark befallene Organe fühlen sich vielfach hart und sandig an. Eine gesicherte Diagnose ist meist nur vom Fachmann aufgrund histologischer Untersuchungen möglich. Die Krankheit ist sehr ansteckend. Die Infektion erfolgt durch Sporen und Pilzfäden über den Kot, eventuell auch über infizierte Kleinkrebse und bei Teichfischen auch durch Verfütterung kranker Meeresfische. Eine medikamentöse Behandlung ist nicht möglich. Stark befallene Bestände sollten deshalb unbedingt vernichtet und die Teiche im Anschluss daran sorgfältig desinfiziert werden.<a href="#cite_note-7">[7]</a>

Das <a href="Genom" title="Genom">Genom</a> von I. hoferi <a href="Prim%C3%A4risolat" title="Primärisolat">Isolat</a> B97 aus einer im Juli 2011 entnommenen Probe von <a href="Adult" title="Adult">adultem</a> <a href="K%C3%B6nigslachs" title="Königslachs">Königslachs</a> (Quinnat, <a href="Englische_Sprache" title="Englische Sprache">englisch</a> Chinook salmon, <a href="Nomenklatur" title="Nomenklatur">wiss.</a> Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) aus dem <a href="Yukon_River" title="Yukon River">Yukon River</a> (<a href="Alaska" title="Alaska">Alaska</a>) wurde <a href="DNA-Sequenzierung" title="DNA-Sequenzierung">sequenziert</a> und im November 2017 veröffentlicht. Das <a href="Haploid" class="mw-redirect" title="Haploid">haploide</a> Genom hat eine Länge von über 80 <a href="Basenpaar" title="Basenpaar">Mbp</a> (Megabasenpaaren) und einen <a href="GC-Gehalt" title="GC-Gehalt">GC-Gehalt</a> von 33,5 %.<a href="#cite_note-NCBI_GCA_002751075.1-8">[8]</a>
